Gemma Zabaleta opened this conference which has attracted leading international experts
The International Conference on Digital Citizenship (#CICD) seeks to be an annual meeting on all aspects of Internet and the concept of digital citizenship. Leading experts from around the world will attend the conference which will be an opportunity to discuss, reflect, discover and use the opportunities offered by the digital society. The conference, which was opened this morning by the Basque Government's Minister for Employment and Social Affairs, Gemma Zabaleta, will analyse different areas from designing a new educational model to redefining the concept of participative democracy, along with the prevention of ICT risks, the boom of the social media, new tools for business and competitiveness, or showcasing talent. "Institutions must open up to the digital society, but opening up does not only mean having more advanced digital media to learn about government action or provide services, but opening up also means dealing with the general public's demands, answer them, involve the people affected by public policies in the decision-taking process and do so with all its consequences," stressed the Minister. She also showcased the Irekia platform as it is "a bi-directional communication window with the general public, along with the commitment to open data". Zabaleta stressed the importance that Lehendakari Patxi López has given to transparency and open government, given that "the worst public policy is the one that is not explained, that is not known, that is not understood by the citizens, that is not crystal clear".
